I spent two weeks as an artist in residence with the Kenny Lake School. Since the school is relatively small with combined classes I got to work with each class every day. The general theme was science illustration and observational drawing and painting. We studied the local winter ecology and created a zine with student illustrations. Students also created artwork for a display in their science lab showing the life cycle of salmon. Some lessons included:
Creating an artistic animal with specific adaptations to winter; field studies of winter ecology; mixed media painting and collage using watercolor and oil pastel.
Landscape field sketching; making a comic strip about winter ecology; science illustration of winter plants; working with a group to create a poster about winter ecology
Keeping a field sketchbook with winter observations; creating science illustrations of animal skulls; designing, illustrating, and editing a page about winter ecology for the zine.
